Check if you or your agency is logged into any of the Google accounts while checking your position on the Google search engine. If yes your search engine ranking might not be true, since Google displays results based on individual’s search patterns it maps your interest over repeated clicks by you on to your own website and will show your pages on top. You could be living in a state of illusion.

While trying to check your genuine ranking on search engine press “ctrl N” to open a new browser window to check your Google rankings as this result is not influenced by your cookie or cache memory. Else you can use a browser which you rarely use

Use your webmaster tool

Your Google / Bing webmaster Tool might just give you an idea on your websites ranking vis a vis a particular search keyword. This might not be very accurate as it gives you an average of your page rankings across geography and a time period

Good that you or your agency has got your website ranked on the top of search engine rankings for a particular keyword, before you pat anyone’s back, go to Google.com, search for “Google keywords tool”. Click on the link to go to Google keywords tool, enter your keyword, select the country you want to target and run your search. The first row is the actual number of searches for your keyword. Imagine all the hardwork you or your agency had been doing on the SEO front for months only to get yourself ranked on top for only a few hundred searches (local monthly- the chosen country) and might add more to your pain if you had been targeting geography as your target searches would be a much smaller number. A pat on the back might just then feel so foolish of you to have wasted months to rank for a keyword which might only be searched a few hundred times, rather would have made sense to run a PPC campaign saving time for your business, not missing out on the limited opportunity during the time lost and if your website is optimised for on page factors with good content you might have just had the same result faster. The credit for this SEO is a waste as even without your activities your website would have reached the same in the absence of serious competition.

The un-noticed mistake.

Log into your “Google analytics” and check the particular page url details. Look for traffic sources, dig deeper into the traffic on to that landing page and check for conversion ratio, bounce rate, in case both send you a ghastly signal chances are you or your agency might have picked up wrong “Off page selection” and your Google rank might not stay for long.

Rankings are not translating into benefits?

Log onto your “Google webmaster tool”, It will give you an idea on all incoming links to your website which you can visit to identify if the directing websites are properties you would want to associate your brand, business, customer etc with. If not you have a wrong “Off page SEO done” and the desired results are going to be a farfetched possibility.
